Here is what Wendee, our Walk and Talk therapist has to say:
It is an effective time saving approach for working on life issues while getting a little exercise in by walking. Numerous studies have recognized the positive relationship between exercise and a healthy mind. The combination of walking and talking may help to improve mood, reduce depression, stress and anxiety. Not to mention, it may improve sleep and lower many health risks. Many experience renewed energy and find that thoughts may become clearer, perhaps due to the release of mood-enhancing endorphins created by physical activity.

Sessions are tailored to your specific needs. A typical session often symbolizing the essence of a walking path; together as we walk, we will be exploring current valleys and peaks in your life. If you are feeling stuck in a situation, the physical act of walking forward may also inspire the forward movement in your current situation. However, there might be times when meeting at the office may be more appropriate to work on certain issues. We also may choose to meet in an office setting altogether.

Whatever is comfortable to you; exercise apparel, sweat pants or dress in layers if it is a little cool. Wear shoes that have adequate cushioning and good support for walking. Depending on the time of day, sunscreen, water, a hat and sunglasses are also a good idea.

Just like starting any other exercise program, it's a good idea to consult with your physician first especially if you any special health conditions. The walk is kept to a conversational pace. Being that I am also an exercise physiologist, I may provide postural techniques along with recommended stretches and tips to help you walk with proper body alignment.

Confidentiality is protected as much as possible, however the fact that we are outdoors and in public does create potential risks. We may choose to slow down or let people pass us while walking. Each situation is different. If you happen to see someone you know you may handle the situation however you choose. If I am approached, I will politely excuse myself to the person without introducing anyone.
