Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of talk therapy that focuses on what is happening with the client in the "here and now", rather than focusing on the past. Though issues from the past inevitably come up and therefore should be attended to, they are not the primary focus of this type of therapy. It is called CBT because the therapist works with the client on thinking patterns (cognitions) and on the behaviors that are causing the client difficulty in his or her life.

CBT is a brief form of therapy with the number of sessions typically being between 6 and 20 depending upon the client's needs, and it involves exercises and homework between sessions. The therapist first helps the client identify distorted thoughts and mistaken beliefs that lead to problem behaviors. Then evidence for and against these thoughts and beliefs is explored. Thirdly, the therapist joins with the client to develop new behaviors and the client experiments with implementing the new behaviors.

CBT does not work for everyone. Some people greatly improve with this type of therapy and others see minimal improvement.
